Perge log boilers are unique in that they are high efficiency log boilers, but simply designed and low maintenance.
There is just so little to go wrong with a Perge boiler - you might possibly have to replace the grate although it is very solid indeed, and after many years you might possibly have to replace the thermostat which controls the air supply - that is about it though the rest of the stove is so solid and simple. 23% of people in France use wood as their primary heat source, and the country is full of Perge boilers that are still happily running after more than 20 years of hard use.
Perge log boilers do not need electricity to run, there are no moving parts (apart from the thermostatic air control), and yet as a result of the superb design they run at an impressive 83% efficiency.
To control the heat output you simply set the desired water temperature you want from your Perge boiler stove. A mechanical thermostat in the boiler changes shape depending on the water temperature and thus moves a small lever. The lever pulls on a chain which opens or closes the air supply to the boiler accordingly, opening the supply up if the temperature drops and visa versa. A very simple solution which is plainly visible so that you can always check that the mechanism is working correctly.
If for some reason the Perge was to overheat there is an integral coil fitted inside the Perge boiler. A thermostat automatically detects the high temperature and flushes cold mains water through the coil and discharges it waste which stops the boiler from overheating. Again this feature of the Perge does not require electricity.
You load your wood into through the top door, and take out what little ash it makes through the bottom ash door. You light a Perge boiler in the same way as you would a stove - only you can fit a lot more wood in and in longer lengths 500mm - 600mm (depending on the model).
A thermostat detects the temperature of the water in the boiler, and sets the burning rate accordingly.
Unlike many log boilers which require frequent maintenance, the Perge requires simple maintenance every 6 months and of course you do need to sweep the chimney. This is because the heat exchangers are actually in the firebox in a Perge - in many other log gasifiyers the heat exchangers are not in firebox, which can make them more prone to getting tarred up if you burn less than perfectly dry wood. The clever design of the Perge does make it more forgiving if your firewood is a little over the recommended moisture level. As always the drier the firewood the more heat you will get from it: time spent seasoning and managing your firewood supply is well spent.
With a flue size of only 175mm, and a height requirement of usually no more than 3000mm, the cost of installation comes right down with a Perge compared with many other log boilers on the market. Experience has shown that Perge log boilers will work in situations where other gasifying boilers will not function properly. Some gasifying boilers need a 200mm, 8m high chimney, which means that installing one into a simple outbuilding is just not practical, or aesthetically pleasing. This can mean a saving of over a thousand pounds on the cost of the flue materials alone.
We can help you select the right size of Perge boiler for your needs, help you design your intallation and flue system, and match the boiler with an accumulator tank.
