When you buy firewood or logs make sure that the logs are well seasoned. A good sign of well seasoned firewood is that the end grain has lots of little cracks in it. Also when well seasoned firewood burns it will burn well and the logs will not hiss excessively. I generally prefer hardwood logs to softwoods as I find that softwoods burn a bit too fast for my liking - they do give out a good amount of heat though and make excellent kindling. I like burning oak and ash logs - ash burns fairly fast and hot whilst oak is slower (a bit more like coal).
I tend to get a truck load of firewood at a time as it works out cheaper than buying individual bags of firewood. I keep the wood in a dry log shed with open ventilation so the logs can dry out even more whilst they are stored there. Where you are going to store your firewood is an important consideration. I store my firewood fairly close to the house because then I don't need to carry it further than I have to. I also store a few days worth of firewood in the house, stacking the firewood up so it takes up less space.
