A picture tells a thousand words!

Comparing wood consumption on an open fire or a modern stove.

We all like a real fire.

It creates a feeling of well being and a connection to our roots and planet through the handling of the wood, the crackle of the fire, the visual effect of the flames and not in the least the warmth created by the fire.

A warm center in our home where we can gather ourselves together - alone or in company.

The home we often regard as our place of refuge where we can relax and wind down from activity.

As well as enjoying the real fire I love handling the wood - chopping the kindling - preparing the fire - all little things that feel calming and almost ritualistic as well as having a practical function.

They now say that the sight, smell and warmth of a real fire tends to raise your mood, activate your endorphins and therefore cheer you up!

Something we can all do with especially in the cold winter months.

This illustration from the SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) compares how many logs you would need to create a certain amount of heat in the room.

It shows quite clearly just how much wood you need to put on an open fire compares to what you use on a modern wood burner!

I certainly remember the cold draft around your ankles when you were in a room with an open fire - a clear sign that a lot of hot air is being pulled up the chimney and out of the room - as well as the room having to replace the air with cold air from the outside!
