Having just returned from a walking trip in the French Alps I was reminded how very organised the people are over there with their firewood. Outside every house, keeping dry under the eaves, are piles of firewood ready for the next winter. Logs are cut to the exact length of the fireplace or stove, split, and piled side by side, creating an outer wooden blanket up against the house. This is very convenient for bringing firewood inside in the winter.
Sometimes there is a separate log store, often covered with just a basic roof of corrugated iron, preventing the worst of the rain and snow penetrating the wood.
Now, back home, I am encouraged to be as prepared for next winter as my friends in France.
