Biomass Boiler Eligibility

Do You Qualify?

To receive the grant for a biomass boiler, your project needs to meet a few key criteria. Here's what to check.

Non-Urban Location

The property must be in a non-urban area — defined as a settlement with a population of fewer than 10,000 people.

Off the Gas Grid

The property must not be connected to the mains gas network. The scheme is aimed at homes currently relying on oil, LPG, or electric heating.

Not a New Build or Self-Build

Biomass boiler grants are not available for new build or self-build homes. Note: self-build homes do qualify for the £7,500 heat pump grant.

Insulation Requirements

The EPC report for the property must not recommend loft or cavity wall insulation — or the owner must commit to installing it. (A good idea regardless, as better insulation means lower heating bills every year.) Exceptions apply where those measures are not physically possible.

MCS Registered Installer & Product

Both the installer and the product must be MCS registered and accredited. This ensures the quality of the installation and the product — and is a firm requirement for grant eligibility.
